Cervical screening

Existing thyroid and breast patients, as well as anyone that makes an appointment for these services will be able to have cervical screening done at the practice.

Please specify that you wish to add cervical screening to your appointment when you make it.

Nearly 11 000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer annually in South Africa, making it the second most common cancer among women as well as having the highest death rate among women. However, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers and is highly treatable, when caught in the early stages, with treatment being able to start as soon as possible.

All women who are sexually active should have regular Pap smears – a painless procedure in which cells are scraped from the cervix and examined under a microscope – that can help detect any abnormalities caused by HPV which can lead to cancer. The recommendation is that a pap smear should preferably be done every 3 years.

Although cervical cancer is mainly caused by HPV, other risk factors for developing cervical cancer includes being overweight, inactive, consuming alcohol, poor dietary habits, smoking and exposure to chemicals. Women with HIV infection also have a higher risk of developing cervical cancer.

Apffelstaedt, Hoosain & Associates have joined the battle against cervical cancer by making cervical screening available at the practice. Any patient booking for a thyroid or breast appointment can request a cervical screening to be done at the same time.
